Collective vs. Individual

During my graduate study at the Rhode Island School of Design, my studio class took a trip to the RISD Museum. We were looking for art and design pieces we were magnetized toward. I was drawn to several pieces that had the quality of part to whole and individual to collective such as Do Ho Suh’s, “who am we?”. The poster I made as a response to this observation is a didactic narrative of parts forming into a whole. The four shapes on the first panel are transformed into the letter “i”. The “i” then joins other individual letters to form a collective word. The word then joins a sentence. Each individual or part is joining and rejoining a collective or whole. The reverse side is a collection of photographs of classmates layered onto each other to form a collective of individuals.
